Gift Ideas for Valentine’s Day 2012

Well I promised to find you some great gift ideas for Valentines Day, and I’ve got a feeling you’re not going to be disappointed with this selection I’ve put together. I’ve been visiting shops and searching the internet to find the best presents that will help you and your love one celebrate Valentines 2012 in style.

I was particularly impressed with the Valentines gifts at Find Me A Gift. The great thing about their site is that there are great presents for all different price ranges. I also like the look of the flowers on offer at Serenata. They’ve really got some of the best arrangements I’ve ever come across.

So this list is a mixture of traditional ideas, like city breaks, and some more unusual Valentines gifts that I think are going to be very popular in 2012.

Freeze Dried Rose Petals – Find Me A Gift

I think these look stunning, and are the perfect Valentines gift. They look and smell fresh, but won’t wilt away. How cool is that? And there are so many different colours to choose from! I’ve ordered mine already.

Silver Rolo – Find Me A Gift

This is another one from Find Me A Gift. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this before, but I think giving someone your last Rolo is such a sweet idea. Especially as it’s silver!

“Someone Special” – Flowers from Serenata

This bouquet really stood out for me (it might be because lilies are my favourite flower). They really are beautiful.

Personalised Champagne and Newspaper- Find Me A Gift

Not only do you get a bottle of personalised champagne, but it comes with a genuine newspaper from a date of your choice which I think is so sweet. It could be the year of your partner’s birth date, or from when you had your first date? I chose rose champagne for this list because I prefer it, but there are others on the site.

City Breaks – Last Minute

romance
Admittedly this isn’t the most original idea, but I’ve been keeping an eye on the site recently and some of the deals are fantastic. Maybe 2012 is your year for a romantic Valentines getaway.

Hire a Harpist – Last Minute Musicians

This one’s an expensive option, but it’s certainly different. The musicians on the site are based all over the UK, so you should be able to find someone near you. They’re mainly used for corporate events, so hiring a musician to serenade your partner will be unique as well as romantic.

Romantic English Towns to visit in 2012

Romantic weekends away are a great way to surprise your partner, or celebrate an anniversary. We’d all like to be whisked away to Paris or Rome, but if your budget’s a bit tight there are plenty of other options. Here’s a selection of romantic towns that are a lot closer to home.

Stow on the Wold

Stow-on-the-Wold, England
Stow on the Wold is a beautiful market town in Gloucestershire. It was built at the top of an 800 ft. hill so it can get very windy, but this doesn’t make it any less romantic.

York

St Mary's Abbey, York
York, in north Yorkshire, is a city, making it the biggest place on this list. This beautiful walled city is the perfect romantic getaway for a couple in love.

Chipping Campden

Kiftsgate Court, Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire - Fountain
If you want to visit somewhere a bit quieter then try Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds. There are a number of old inns and quirky hotels to suit the hopeless romantic.

Chester

Chester lies on the River Dee in the in the English county of Cheshire. The city has a number of beautiful medieval buildings and is perhaps the best persevered walled city in the whole of Britain.

Clovelly

Clovelly High Street
This Devon village has become a major tourist attraction because of its history and beautiful scenery. It’s often said that Clovelly has been on more calendars than any other British village, and it’s easy to see why.

An Early Valentine’s Present from Paul McCartney

iPod in Love!

Firstly, may I wish you my very warmest wishes for a happy and healthy 2012.

If, like me, you’re crazily excited about Valentine’s Day then you’ll appreciate this early gift from Paul McCartney.

The first track from Paul McCartney’s new album has been unleashed on the internet. The track does however have a name, and it’s called “My Valentine”. The former Beatle’s lyrics are as beautiful as ever, and on this track there’s even the added bonus of Eric Clapton on guitar.

You can listen to the track here. The full album, expected to also be titled “My Valentine” is scheduled to be released in February 2012. Pretty good timing I reckon.

Romantic Movies That Aren’t Chick Flicks

Day 331: Still Great

When it comes to watching a romantic movie the tendency is to reach for the chick flick, but it’s a common misnomer. Romantic films are responsible for some of the all time greats. And although things rarely turn out for the best as in the lighter stuff designed for pyjama parties don’t be put off. This makes them no less romantic…

Casablanca, 1942

It’s the romantic ending of all romantic endings. Bogart and Bergman’s goodbye is unsurpassed in film history, “…you’ll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life…”. I feel weepy just thinking about it. As an interesting aside to the romance, the final scene with the plane in the background is a forced perspective. The producers were ‘short’ of cash and used a scale model and to make it fit they used dwarf extras in the background. Clever, huh?

Brief Encounter, 1945

It’s arguably the most romantic tale ever told. A study of repression and restraint this classic keeps commuters optimistic that one day their tiresome daily grind might have its monotony broken by crippling love arriving out of the blue on a blustery platform. The film is an archetype of understated yet over felt desire. Amazing.

The Graduate, 1967

Forget “Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me. Aren’t you?” It’s all about the climax, the dramatic and for all appearances ‘Hollywood ending’ that the film gives to the viewer. Yet the uneasiness that prevails throughout and continues as the titles run give one the conclusion that love is a complicated and misunderstood force.

True Romance, 1993

Despite its name this film involves all you’d expect from a story originally penned by Tarantino, i.e. violence and swearing. But seeing as we’re all grownups, I’ve included it here. In reality it is an achingly tender love story between a prostitute and an Elvis loving, comic book reading, martial arts cinema fan outsider. It’s pulp movie making at its best. Clarence and Alabama blaze a trail, protecting one another by whatever means necessary. A talented ensemble cast doesn’t do any harm either. It’s quality, plus it supplants the phrase ‘I love you’ with ‘you’re so cool’. Which, is so cool!

Lost In Translation, 2003

It is a poetic and beautiful film about the connection between two characters who find themselves ever more marginalised in their own lives. Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson’s characters tentatively grow close after meeting in a Tokyo hotel and embark on an adventure. Sofia Coppola creates a film in which you feel like nothing happens, but afterwards the world seems a better place. Magnificent.

Let’s Talk About Love

To begin my adventures into blogging the romantic I thought it’d be cool to put together a list of quotes on the subject of love. Obviously there are loads out there, but I thought I’d collect a few that say something to me…

Romantic Zither
Got the picture from here, not entirely relevant but who can resist a romantic zither?!?!

This is funny, it appears Albert wasn’t just a whiz kid at maths and science and stuff, he was also fond of a pun…

“Gravitation cannot be held responsible for people falling in love.”

- Albert Einstein

Weird is cool. And what could be better than mutual weirdness?

“We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love.”

- Dr. Suess

Not the most romantic admittedly, but certainly thought-provoking…

“Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then.”

- Katherine Hepburn

I really like this next quote, just a straightforward and simply stated view on young love. When you start thinking of it in the terms ol’ Winston states here ‘though, love seems impossibly grand yet uncomplicated at the same time. Confounding, just like love itself some might say…

“Where does the family start? It starts with a young man falling in love with a girl. No superior alternative has yet been found.”

- Sir Winston Churchill

This next one is just really, really sexy and intense…

“He felt now that he was not simply close to her, but that he did not know where he ended and she began.”

- Leo Tolstoy

Love it, and so very true…

“Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love.”

- Charlie Brown

And finally, this is just a brilliant analogy for love…

“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.”

- Carl Jung

Did I miss off your favourite? It’s likely I might have, there are so many good ones out there. Let me know in the comments…
